I skipped over the root generation, as it’s just a useless twist on an older process. “Useless” in that I don’t think it adds any value to construct a root from favorite things. There are plenty of other sources of protein, and today vegans (for whom eating even insects is streng verboten) can build healthy diets, even if they have to work a little harder and be more conscious about it. Insects would be yet another level of inefficiency in the system: it’s nearly always most efficient to get nutrients from the most base layer, plants (or fungus, whatever). If all you’re going for is pure efficiency, plants do it all. You may want to kill yourself just to end the culinary misery, but we’re not taking about pleasure or quality of life, only efficiency and base dietary needs.

I’m not a survivalist, but I’m also not a meal planner, so having a bunch of canned and dried food makes throwing together meals easier. I have guns. A .308, and a guide gun, some handguns, which will be mostly useless. And a bunch of ammo, because for a few years I’d buy boxes of .308 on sales and bought way more than I shot; and I have everything needed to reload the guide gun because 45-70 ammo is damned expensive. So I could hunt and defend the house reasonably well, although indigenous peoples would still get me in the jungle if I left the house.

But, honestly, disease or wildlife would almost certainly get me sooner rather than later. No penicillin. Limited supply of pain medication, flouride. No knowledge of Peruvian wildlife outside of knowing that there are venemous animals and predators capable of taking humans. I don’t speak native Peruvian, whatever the languages were 720 years ago, so I can’t communicate with the natives. I don’t know what’s edible and what’s poisonous, so unless I go full Keto, I’m going hungry. It would be absurdly presumptuous to believe I could last any amount of time.

You mean R&S? Yeah. There were maybe 4 funny ones, and the rest were crap. Space Madness, however, is IMHO one of the greatest pieces of comedy ever produced. Maybe it was just one-hit-wonder syndrome.

I have. It’s not bad, despite my several grievances with it. Mainly the Gorn redesign as cheap knock-offs of Xenomorphs, that Kirk could never have hand-to-handed. And I really, really dislike the whole Spock/nurse Chapel story line. T’Pring was grossly mistreated, and it makes Spock’s surprise at her behavior in Amok Time completely out of character: he knew what he did. I’m also not fond of jumping directly to musical episodes in so early; shows usually only do that when they start running out of other ideas. I had to fast-forward through most of that one. I was really unhappy about killing off… who they killed off. I would have preferred almost any other character be sacrificed if they really felt it necessary.

But all that said, there is a lot of good, and I’ll keep watching it. I think my biggest gripe is that they picked SNW to continue, over Lower Decks‽ That was bogus; LD was a far better show.

As an American, I’ve never been. When I lived in Bavaria, though, it was an extremely popular vacation destination. I remember being rather shocked because it just never occurred to me that it had beaches and warmth, and wasn’t really that far from Munich; I just had never in my life in the US met anyone before who’d gone there, that I knew about.

This is a solved problem; on some distros it’s not even an optional install; it’s just set up automatically.

Before refind-btrfs, I used my phone to download and burn rescue ISOs on demand, because it had become so infrequent a need. The last time I broke my system was replacing the root NVMe with a larger one; I dd’ed the old onto the new and missed a UUID change. It must have been a half dozen years since the previous time.

My systems got a lot more stable when I changed to a rolling release distro.
