I would loudly go on the record for my reasoning that Hypertext Markup Language is not Turing Complete, and therefore fails to be a programming language by the only academic and theoretical definition that matters.

They already are going to award me “lawyer up” money, so I’ll come after them for damages later if B is the "right’ answer.

  • Yes, exactly! People were easily misled to think that provable attribution for a thing is the same as ownership.

FWIW, I think that a blockchain registry for attribution would be invaluable for combating misinformation. The problem is to get content providers (media) and browsers to cooperate over a standard. If you could get a few certificate registrars onboard, it would work even better, since they have the secure infrastructure to seed this whole thing and help manage identities for the parties involved.

  • I agree. It’s kind of a tightrope these days. As a white, cis, hereto, middle-aged, male, I pretty much clock as the poster-child for privilege. I am palpably aware that crying loudly for any support might just come off as tasteless, or even insensitive in the wrong group.

Yet, a lot of our social ills these days look an awful lot like mental illness, which is poorly compensated for through evil, perpetrated by people that resemble this description. Zero social support means you just listen to Joe Rogan instead, while projecting trauma as hate.

This poster/meme might work better if it aimed for equality and that it doesn’t exclude anyone. Or maybe if it had a quote from research or some person of note about the silent epidemic that is men’s mental/social health issues.

    Edit: some clarification.

I’m trying to argue that while I agree with the poster’s message on its face, the delivery is problematic, if however subtly so.

The message on the poster aligns strongly with a privileged group (“men”). Therefore it’s wise to use different or additional language to include/acknowledge less privileged groups, lest it be interpreted (or co-opted) as exclusive to that privileged group. It’s hard to be succinct while doing this though.

To be clear, you’d see me side with movements like BLM over whitewashed nonsense like “all lives matter”, any day of the week. I’m not suggesting we do away with targeted language on the basis of it being exclusionary. What I am saying is that one must be VERY careful to put things out there that can be utilized in an exclusionary way.

  • Is Sisyphus happy?

Possibly. For once in his endless existence he now has an objective aside from “move this big rock.” No matter which target gets clobbered, moving the boulder has a point. That and nobody has any idea what will really happen - how exciting! Who knows, maybe we do this all again tomorrow and see if the outcome is the same?

As a bonus, if you give Sisyphus the ability to choose which target, he gets to exercise some agency. Forever in a state of doing the same exact thing all the time, this would likely feel like sipping on ambrosia for the first time. It would be a tremendous act of mercy.

Edit: Also, Tartarus is now in anarchy, so anything is possible.

OP’s thought experiment shows that some rando just showed up with lodging of infinite size and the nautical manifestation of a logical paradox, in his back pocket. And what does he do with this awesome, reality-bending power? They conduct philosophical experiments that only end in more questions. Moreover, he’s aggravating Zeus’ terms of Sisyphus’ imprisonment, and you don’t have to be Prometheus to know that’s playing with fire. The gods must be busy doing, uh, other things.

  • I’m kinda/sorta there now. The factory media console in my car “understands” mp3 files on a USB flash drive. Why Nissan decided to go with the most cursed UI/UX imaginable to navigate this is beyond me. It’s practically useless. I would love to slap in a 1990’s vintage Pioneer head unit - with mp3 capability - and call it a day.

  • I have never been more motivated by the complete absence of a social safety-net, than each day I have spent unemployed.

As Americans, perhaps we behave this way largely to do normalization and indoctrination. And maybe some are tacitly aware of the fragility of this arrangement. But for those of us that have stared into the financial and classist chasm that sits beneath us all, it vastly exceeds any unease you might feel from not keeping up with your peers.
